The past few months have swum right on by. Spring was absolutely inspirational with its new growth and the first few steps of summer have been action packed. A short list of things I have had the privilege of experiencing and some future plans are below. Here is what I've been up to since February:
The second part of my summer promises to be much less air born. I intend to use the time to reflect and reorient. It has been a year since I ventured forth into the world beyond New York and I have learned much. Most importantly, I want to be meaningfully connected to the people I love the most, you. If you feel the desire to talk, dance, play, work, laugh or cry with me, please do so. With love abounding, Lucie Baker See the text from my last eblast sent in February below!

Since my last dispatch in May I presented my work in progress Restless Night, I moved out of New York City and relocated to my home town of Seattle, Washington. I am very happy to be back in the land of trees and mountains but harbor a deep and abiding reverence for all the incredible people and experiences I had in the last ten years in NYC. I took the opportunity after moving to travel. I've experienced many changes, countries, languages and feelings in the last 8 months. It has been great fun and a great challenge. Here is a list of places I've been and some highlights since June: Plovdiv, Bulgaria : Layers at Black Box International Dance and Theater Festival New York City, NY : Recitals at Chen Dance Center Seattle, Wa : Classes and workshops at Velocity Dance Center Coeur d'Alene, Idaho : Lady of the Lake Dance and Music Camp Nashville, TN : Phantom Limb Creative Residency at OZ Vienna, Austria : Impulstanz! Roma, Italy : Eating all the gelato, seeing all the sights Brussels, Belgium : Improv workshop with David Zambrano Bergen, Norway : Frolicking on Mt. Floyen Goteborg, Sweden : The dancers of Gotesborg Danskompani Wuppertal, Germany : Tanztheater Wuppertal's Sweet Mambo Vancouver BC, Canada : Visiting Kidd Pivot rehearsals Los Angeles, CA : Halloween! Hawai'i, HI : Seeing whales, swimming with turtles, chasing geckos. Needless to say this journeying has taught me many things. Some old lessons were hammered home including, introduce yourself to everyone, ask every question, and don't put anything off because you might not pass this way again. As we hurtle through 2015 I wish you great energy. May the rest of the year bring you joy and purpose. Tally - ho! Lucie B Dearest Doves,
There is so much happening this month I am overwhelmed. First off I will be teaching a movement workshop at Gibney Dance Center 280 Broadway (the former DNA) on Thursday May 15th at 10am. It will be an hour long physical warm up to get you started for the day and then an hour of investigating the improv ideas that I have discovered with my performers in the creation of Restless Night. It is open to dancers and non-dancers so if you were looking for a place to get your groove on and work your brain this is it. I suggest a donation of $20. It is a fundraiser for my current work. May 20th is my birthday and I have not yet decided how to spend it. It will be racuous and at 8:30pm that evening somewhere in New York City. Stay tuned and in touch. My next event is a showing of my work in progress, Restless Night, on May 24th at Gibney Dance Center 890 Broadway (the Union Square location) at 6:30pm. It is a studio showing and has limited seating so please RSVP to luciebaker@gmail.com in order to attend. Restless Night is an exploration of the way the subconscious life manifests in our everyday relationships. I have been working with the amazing performers Rowan Magee, Erica Newhouse and Leah Walsh. It has been a joy and a pleasure to share the space with them. The following day, May 25th, I will be hosting a Moving Sale. That's right, folks, I'm moving. I am cutting my tethers and launching myself into the unknown. First, I will head to Seattle to regroup and then to Europe to explore and seek employment. However, before that can happen, I need to empty my apartment of all its contents. Please help me do this by coming over that Sunday and haggling with me for lamps, furniture and other sundries. Doors open at Noon. Get there! On May 30th I will be performing my last show in New York City (for the foreseeable future) at 8:30pm at the Brooklyn Zen Center with the lovely ladies of Erica Essner Performance Coop. It will be a bit of a test run of the piece that we are premiering in Bulgaria the following week. It is athletic, delicate and involves a lot of lifting; worth a gander. Overall, it is a jam pack month and I would really love to see all my friends at all these events. Join me! The party is now! http://us7.campaign-archive2.com/?u=64b4244e2a61c1c4bc98ae085&id=98f9ec23e5&e=355d7a794c Okay, Everyone! It is about time for an update.
Here is what has been going down since the summer in depth. Between spending time in California and Seattle I did indeed partake in a fabulous anatomy course called FAMI. I learned from amazing anatomists, surgeons, doctors and cadavers. My brain grew three sizes in that weekend alone. I highly recommend it for those with a curiosity for the body. In the fall I traveled with Jane Comfort to perform Beauty at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and later worked on our new piece Altiplano at American Dance Institute in Maryland. I also had the wonderful opportunity to develop new work with Phantom Limb Company at the Robert Rauschenburg Estate on Captiva Island. So inspiring! As the new year approached I had the pleasure to perform two short duets of my own. One with Dion Mucciacito at STUFFED at Judson Church and the other with Rowan Magee at Picasso Machinery. It was the cherry on top of a thrilling year. January has rolled into February with its usual fervor, starting with APAP shows with Jane, a trip to Tampa to show Beauty in the middle and performances of Cindy Salgado's new work in the end. This week will see the premiere of Babar, a children's show choreographed by Jane Comfort and Co. As the final snows of the season come down I relish the beauty and anticipate the revolution of spring. 2014 has a fair wind behind it! In case you missed it! http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=64b4244e2a61c1c4bc98ae085&id=371f3a7a37&e=2052033dc8
Dearest Dears, Too often I have performances or I am working on something mind-boggling or I am reading a great book and the whirl wind of life takes hold of me and I don't tell anyone. I want to share with you the things I love and the only way to start is to start. Here we go.2013 has been spent doing a number of notable and surprising things including: - Learning to operate marionettes while on stilts and making new work with Phantom Limb Company - Performing like a Barbie and a bug for Jane Comfort - Lifting ladies for Erica Essner - Dancing in feathers and petticoats for Jordana Toback and the Dreamland Follies (See Above Photo) - Coordinating the activities of Tamar Rogoff Performance Projects - Teaching dance at Bronx International High School for ASTEP and - Pointing my toes and moving like a lion while teaching at the Chen Dance Center Most recently, I performed two original duets. One with the fabulous Rowan Magee at Picasso Machinery (It involved a lamp and a hula) and the other with fantastic Dion Mucciacito at STUFFED at Judson Memorial Church (It was his dance debut!). Both were great fun to make and perform. I dream of following that inspiration down a rabbit hole in the future. The thing I am most excited to share with you!! Since my last birthday, May 20th, 2013, I have been improvising a dance and recording it on an iPhone every day. I post these dances to YouTube. The goal is to do this for an entire year. Now that I have past the half way mark, I feel brave enough to tell you that they exist. There are no rules to the improv, only that I must do one once a day until my next birthday and present it to the world wide audience of the internet. A few things I have learned: - I almost always want to dance bigger than the frame - My shoes, outfit, the flooring and how sturdy the architecture is drastically affects my movement. - Usually, I am camera shy. I have to force my self to face it. My goal is to keep my creative muscles toned with out the pressure of judgement or an end goal. It is an exploration for discovery's sake. Some are interesting. Some aren't. Some are funny. Most are odd. It is my gift to you, enjoy! I will be winging westward to spend Christmas with my family in Seattle and anticipate the New Year with a fire in my heart. It is my wish that you all stay warm and well. I send you all my love. Cheers, Lucie Baker FacebookWebsiteYouTubeCopyright © 2013 Lucie Baker, All rights reserved. |
